A Habitica alternative without the game
Looking for a Habitica alternative? Crek is a free habit tracker with unlimited habits and a streak for each one — no avatar, no XP, no health bar to lose.
Updated
Habitica turns your habits into a role-playing game. You make an avatar, and every task you tick off earns experience and gold; skip a daily task and your character loses health. For a lot of people that's exactly the push they need. For others, the game slowly becomes the thing they're managing instead of their habits — and that's usually when they start looking for an alternative.
Why people look for a Habitica alternative
The reasons come up again and again:
- The game gets in the way. Gear, pets, quests and party battles are fun, but they're also more to look at every time you just want to tick off "read 20 pages".
- Missing a day is punished. In Habitica, unfinished Dailies cost your avatar health. That can motivate, or it can make a bad week feel worse and turn opening the app into something you avoid.
- Rewards stop feeling like rewards. Once the novelty of levelling up wears off, the points can feel like noise between you and the plain question: did I do it today?
- It's more than a habit tracker. Habits, Dailies and To-dos are three different kinds of task with their own rules. Some people want one simple list.
None of that makes Habitica a bad app. It just means the thing that makes it special is also the thing some people want less of.
What Habitica does well
It's worth being fair about what you'd be giving up.
- It's genuinely motivating for the right person. If you like games, turning a to-do list into a quest is a clever trick, and it works.
- Accountability with friends. Parties and shared quests mean your missed tasks affect other people, which is a strong reason to show up.
- It covers a lot. Habits you do any number of times a day, Dailies on a schedule, and one-off To-dos with due dates, plus reminders and widgets.
- The core app is free. An optional subscription ($4.99 a month, or $47.99 a year in the US) adds extras, but you don't need it to track habits.
If the game is what keeps you going, stay. If it's what's wearing you out, read on.

Crek as a Habitica alternative
Crek is a free habit tracker that does the plain version of the job. You add a habit, tick it off when you've done it, and it counts your streak. That's the reward: a row of filled-in days and a number going up.
- No game at all. No XP, levels, gold or avatar. We took them out on purpose — the calendar is the product.
- Missing a day doesn't cost you anything but the streak. Your completion rate and every other day of your record stay exactly where they were. If you did it and forgot to tick it, fill the day in afterwards — up to a year back.
- Unlimited habits, free. No subscription and nothing locked behind one.
- Streaks that understand rest days. A habit can repeat every day, on the weekdays you choose (say Monday, Wednesday and Friday), or once a month, and its streak only counts the days it was due.
- A to-do list and notes beside your habits. The things you do once and the things you do every day live in the same place — a simpler take on Habitica's To-dos.
- Accountability without the game. Make a group with friends, a partner or family and add the habits you're doing together. Set one for everyone and each of you keeps your own streak — see tracking habits with friends.
- Nothing to install. Crek is a website, so it works in the browser on iPhone, Android and desktop. Try it straight away at /habit-tracker with no signup; sign in with Google when you want it on all your devices.
What Crek doesn't have: reminders (not yet), or anything to unlock. Groups show who's done what, but nothing happens to anyone's avatar when you miss a day — if you need the stakes of a group quest, that's a real difference.
Other alternatives worth a look
- A paper tracker. If what you liked about Habitica was the visual progress, a printable habit tracker on the fridge gives you that with no screen at all.
- A spreadsheet. If you like building your own system, the Google Sheets and Excel habit tracker template is free and fully editable.
- Loop Habit Tracker is a well-regarded free, open-source habit tracker if you're on Android and want an app that works offline — see Loop alternatives for more on it.
How to switch from Habitica
There's no importer, so you start fresh — which is often the point.
- Pick your two or three most important Dailies. The ones you actually care about, not the whole list. A clean start is a good moment to drop the tasks that were only there for the gold.
- Add them to Crek as habits, with the days they're due.
- Fill in recent days by hand if you want your streak to carry over. Tap a past day on the habit's calendar to mark it done.
- Move one-off tasks into the to-do list as they come up, rather than copying everything across on day one.
If you're rebuilding a habit from scratch, how to build a habit that actually sticks covers starting small and what to do when you miss a day — no health bar required.
