How to use the template

  1. Get your own copy — download the .xlsx, then in Google Sheets choose File → Import → Upload, or just open it in Excel.
  2. Write your habits in column A. There are twelve rows; leave the rest blank.
  3. Tick each day by picking ✓ from the dropdown in its cell. The cell fills in dark, and the totals on the right update.
  4. Start a new month by typing its date into cell B2 — or leave it: it opens on the current month by itself.

How the formulas work

Everything is plain spreadsheet formulas, so you can read them, change them or build your own sheet from them.

  • The month in B2 is =EOMONTH(TODAY(),-1)+1 — the first day of the current month.
  • Each day is B2 plus its offset, left blank once it runs into the next month: =IF(MONTH($B$2+3)=MONTH($B$2),$B$2+3,"").
  • Days done counts the ticks in a row: =COUNTIF(C6:AG6,"✓").
  • The percentage divides that by the days in the month, =COUNT($C$5:$AG$5).

Prefer checkboxes in Google Sheets?

Google Sheets can use real checkboxes instead of the ✓ dropdown. Select the day cells (C6 to AG17), choose Insert → Checkbox, then change the Done formula to count ticked boxes instead of ticks: =COUNTIF(C6:AG6,TRUE). Change the colour rule under Format → Conditional formatting to “is equal to” TRUE and the cells fill in again when checked.

Spreadsheet or app?

A spreadsheet is endlessly flexible and great on a laptop. On a phone it’s fiddly, and it won’t count your streaks. If you want both, keep the sheet for the monthly overview and use the free online habit tracker day to day — it counts every habit’s streak, works in any browser and needs no account. There’s also a printable habit tracker for the fridge.

Questions

Is the habit tracker template free?

Yes. Download it or copy it as many times as you like, change it however you want, and share it. No sign-up.

How do I get it into Google Sheets?

Download the .xlsx, then in Google Sheets choose File → Import → Upload and pick the file. You can also drop it into Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets.

Does it work in Excel?

Yes. The same file opens in Excel on Windows and Mac and in Excel for the web, with the dropdowns, formulas and colours working as they do in Google Sheets.

How do I track a different month?

Type any date into cell B2 — the first of the month is easiest. The days, weekday letters and totals all follow, including the right number of days for the month.

Can it count my streaks?

The template counts days done and the month's percentage. Streaks are much easier in an app: the free habit tracker on crek.io counts every habit's current and best streak for you, and works in any browser.
